Goals of Community Involvement
- To develop an awareness and understanding of civic responsibility.
- To help in supporting and strengthening communities
- To contribute to positive self image and a sense of worth in the community
- To develop key contacts and links within the community.
Key Elements
- A minimum of 40 approved community service hours
- Required for Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
- Completed outside of scheduled class time.
- Must be unpaid activities
- Cannot be completed in the summer break between Grade 8 and Grade 9
Eligible Settings/Activities for Community Service
- Must be selected from the District School Board approved list or approved by the principal or designate, in writing, prior to the activity taking place.
Ineligible Settings for Community Service
Activites involving:
- a requirement for a class or course in which the student is enrolled
- Operation of vehicle/power equipment, use of scaffolding
- Handling of dangerous goods, under the Occupational Health & Safety Act
- Banking, or handling other valuables
- Court ordered programs
- Duties normally performed at home
- Would normally be performed for wages by a person in the workforce
Responsibilities of Board
- To develop an approved list of activities
- To ensure activities that are in keeping with provincial direction and School Board insurance carrier requirements.
Responsibilities of School
- To provide students with Board approved list of eligibile and ineligible activities
- To provide students with documents required to complete and record activities
- To keep records of students' community involvement
Responsibilities of Student
- To identify, select and notify the school of activity prior to involvement
- Recieve permission from the principal and notify the school of activity prior to involvement if not on approved list
- To maintain record on provided tracking form details of community invovlvement including:
- Name of person/organization receiving service
- Activity performed
- Dates and number of hours
- Signature of student, parent and organization representative.
