EXTENDED FRENCH

Lakewood School offers an option Extended French program for students in Grade 7 and 8.

School Board in Ontario may offer three types of French programs: Core, Extended and Immersion. The Core Program (or a native language program, if available), is compulsory for all students up to the end of Grade 8. In Extended French and French Immersion programs, students study subjects other than French using French as the language of instruction. The course content is the same as in the English language stream, but the material is taught in French. This gives vocabulary, knowledge of language structures, and ability to use the language in the real-life context.

Students who complete the Extended French program will accumulate more than twice as many hours of French language instruction as students who complete the Core program. Because instruction is entirely in French, students completing the program are functionally bilingual. Graduates of Extended French in the Kenora system have gone on to take advantage university courses with French as the language of instruction, and to live and work in French-speaking environments.

The major requirement for attending Extended French classes is commitment. Students do not need to be top-level academic students, but they must have a work ethic that demonstrates their commitment to the program.
